William J. Switala lists the turnpike as an "avenue of escape" in his book "Underground Railroad in Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia."

Does he specifically state the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike? There are several Turnpikes throughout the state, so I just want to make sure he cites the SPT? That would be great to have a real piece of evidence to what the old timers here still talk about. Thank you, for your input!

Page 115 "Another link between Virginia and the Ohio River was the Stauton (sic) - Parkersburg Road. Completed in 1847, it was one of the first all-weather roads in the state." The source is noted as "Writer's Program, West Virginia ("West Virginia: A Guide to the Mountain State" - one of the WPA guides.)
