Proper Theater EtiquetteAt a Live Theater Performance, One Should Have a Manner of Decorum
At a live theater performance, and at a movie theater, there are certain rude behaviors that should be avoided.
There is a certain manner of decorum that should be displayed in theaters- live theater or movie theaters. If proper etiquette is not displayed, one may be asked to leave the theater. It is considerate to avoid rude behaviors so as not to disturb others who are trying to enjoy the performance. PunctualityOften times theaters will close their doors once a show starts and not allow people inside until intermission, when the doors open again. It is important to be on time both when the performance starts and when the second half is about to start. Even if the theater staff does let you in, it extremely rude to have to crawl over people to get to your seat and block people's view from the stage. Proper DressYou don't need to buy an expensive gown or tux (although this is acceptable for some performances) but avoid wearing jeans, flip-flops, and other extremely casual dress. To this rule, there are exceptions. The extent to which you dress up often depends on the theater and performance. Some may require jackets and ties for men, while others may not. The minimum for both men and women, for most theaters, should be dress pants and a nice shirt or blouse. Be QuietLaughter and applause (when appropriate) are okay. However, talking is extremely rude. It detracts from the show for yourself and for those around you. You can be thrown out for talking. This is one of the most rude things you can do in a theater. Don't Get UpAs previously mentioned, it's extremely rude to block people's view from the stage and to crawl over people while the show is going on. Before the show and during intermission it might be a good idea to visit the restroom. If you absolutely have to get up, they might not let you back in. Cell PhonesSetting your phone to vibrate is not good enough, because people all around you will still here it. And do not open your cell phone. The light is distracting for those around you and texting in the theater is not okay. Food and BeverageSome theaters might allow bottled water, and some allow food and drink. If it is permitted then it is okay. However, if it has a noisy wrapper, open it before hand. Try to keep it as quiet as possible. If food and drinks are not allowed in the theater then don't try to sneak them in. Once again, you could be asked to leave.
