A discussion of two cultural indicators of a death wish: alli, new diet drug could cause cancer. People are fantasizing about and imagining the death of Paris Hilton.

What do Paris Hilton and the new over the counter medication alli have in common?

Over the past few weeks many websites have made money in page hits revenue because of articles about the bogus Paris Hilton sculpture and/or morality prop here.

Key Word Search Gives Clue

The most frequent key word searches are “Paris Hilton dead”, “Paris Hilton dies”, "Paris Hilton died". Overall, what the key words say is that the general public of the internet is anticipating the death of Paris Hilton, just as the sculptor who made the piece implies through his work of an image of a dead, naked Paris. What this says is that as humans, we await with glee the demise of the too rich, too thin party girl gone out of bounds.

New Diet Drug With Lower Case Letter

This week a new drug called alli, with a lowercase first letter, from GlaxoKlineSmith was released. It basically helps you lose weight by pushing out your food a little faster, thereby not allowing as much fat to be absorbed into the body. Sounds great, right? Wrong.

Turns out, this drug has been shown to cause precancerous lesions in the colons of test rats, something so serious an indicator that a strongly-worded letter was put out by Dr. Sidney Wolfe of the Citizen’s Health Research Group. Here’s a quote, “This marks the first time, to my knowledge, that the FDA has approved a drug for over-the-counter use despite knowing in advance that the drug causes either cancer or pre-cancerous lesions.”

Selling the Drug

While the point-of-sale advertisement at the WalMart stressed that the consumer has to combine exercise and diet with alli, don’t most people who buy a weight-loss drug want to avoid the life style change? There was no one buying these at local stores even though West Virginia ranks high for obesity nationwide.

Here’s the point, while the info of alli’s potential harm has been well advertised, consumers in other parts of the United States are still buying the stuff in droves. Why? Because we would rather have cancer than be fat. On the scale of disease desirability, cancer is better than obesity, perhaps in the minds of most weight-loss drug consumers.

So why do we hate Paris Hilton and imagine her death? Perhaps we imagine our own. We would like to be Paris Hilton, but cannot, so we imagine her death. What strange critters we are. It is enough to make one very, very hungry.
