Google's top searches revolve around social networking, celebrity news, music, and watching movies. How many top search key words can you cram into one article? ;-)

If you write for the internet, chances are good that your most frequent hits will come from Google. So it is with great interest that we examine the 2006 Year-End Google Zeitgeist. It is a wonderful window into what the globe is thinking about. In some ways, it taps us into the great collective unconscious of the world. Below are some thoughts on the top searches.

Google.com - Top Searches in 2006

1. bebo - Bebo is the UK equivalent of MySpace, and typical of social networking sites mostly favored by the under 40 demographic.

2. myspace - Social networking site where people try to cram as many graphics into one small space. Choose your friends here in a broad, casual kind of way.

3. world cup - Soccer aka football for Europeans.

4. metacafe - Metacafe is a Utube sort of site where one can view popular, funny, or contemporary videos.

5. radioblog - Radioblog is a site that allows you to set up a playlist of your favorites songs. They were a bit light in the Richard Thompson department, perhaps someone could help them out? ;-)

6. wikipedia - Wikipedia: if I have to actually explain this, the old fart alert is going off. Look it up.

7. video - Video, as in, everybody wants to watch movies.

8. rebelde - Rebelde is the name of a non-existent Mexican soap opera and band, RBD, that evolved out of the TV show.

9. mininova - Mininova is a site that lets you download music, videos, software and games. The site didn't work on my OS X on a Safari browser. But do check out the cool top hits page on mininova here

10. wiki - Wiki is the software that Wikipedia uses that allows users to create and edit online a large and growing database of knowledge. The fun and annoying part of the site and the software is that sometimes pages are shut down due to online editing and/or pissing contests. In the words of the Wikipedia site: "the joy of editing is that although it should be aimed for, perfection is not required."

This is just one fascinating and tasty list from the Google Zeitgeist...check it out.
