Dead Naked Paris Hilton ArtworkDaniel Edwards is an artist who uses shock and celebrity as themesA sculpture of a naked, dead Paris HIlton, by artist Daniel Edwards, is on display at an art gallery in Brooklyn, New York as part of a Public Service Announcemment
The artist Daniel Edwards has created a sculpture or tableau to be used as an interactive display to teach a lesson about the evils of drunk driving. The sculpture itself is life-size and represents the naked corpse of Paris Hilton with legs splayed, with a sad Tinkerbell the Chihuahua, and with a cell phone still clutched in her hand. Tinkerbell and Paris both wear tiaras. The public is invited to open up Paris through her pelvis and to take out her small intestines and uterus complete with twin dead fetuses. And what is the Public supposed to learn about through this display? The sculpture is supposed to de-glamorize the life of a bon vivant and partier, such as Paris Hilton. She is also supposed to have died as the result of her drunk driving. The unborn fetuses are supposed to also bring attention to teen pregnancy crisis, though it should be noted that Paris Hilton is 26. Participants may remove her innards (presumably through her pelvis) and examine them. This act is supposed to give the viewer the coroner’s perspective. The context of the artwork is that it is part of a educational display meant to promote awareness of the dangers of drunk driving during prom season, and includes promotional material from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). The reception for the display is Saturday May 12 from 6-9pm at Capla Kesting Fine Art, 121 Roebling Street, Brooklyn, NY. If the artist Daniel Edwards sounds familiar it is because he was the creator of two other controversial works of art – a sculpture of Britney Spears giving birth, and a bronzing of Suri Cruise’s first bowel movement. While it’s true that Edwards has a talent for making convincing representational and beautiful sculptures of the human form, the content of his work is mediocre. So far, the two thin threads that hold together the work of Daniel Edwards artwork is the use of celebrity and shock value. There are too many mixed messages in this alleged Public Service Announcement that has been created to educate and inform. While Paris Hilton is supposed to be de-glamorized by being dead, her physical beauty remains intact and she is recognizable. The limbs and body position of the sculpture are not in rigor mortis. This body is still clearly a sculpture made by a sculptor who wanted his work and her body to remain flawless. Where are Paris’ wounds and injuries that would truly shatter her physical perfection and perhaps give a better scaring aid for this visual moral tale?
