The most recent Sedaris book, When You Are Engulfed In Flames, has many of his stories that are familiar to his This American Life and New Yorker fans. Just as in his previous "American-abroad experience" book, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Sedaris discusses his struggles to learn another language, this time Japanese. He shows Japan through the same Sedaris-made kaleidoscope that his audience has used to look at North Carolina, New York, England and France. He also discusses his successful quest to stop smoking, and his daily fascination with the small bits of life that few others notice.
When a reader (or listener) goes to see David Sedaris, it is wise to bring a copy of one of his books because he usually stays (for hours) to participate in book signings and meet his fans. Sedaris books are for sale in the lobby, of course, but often he uses his venue to sell other people's books. In previous tours, he has promoted The Zombie Survival Guide and a psychology book.
