Pratt Institute in New York City offers a generous financial aid package in the worldwide art capital. Amy Aronoff, the PR Manager at Pratt, was kind enough to answer some questions that help to describe the unique selling points of this school of art and communications design. There are so many opportunities available for art students at Pratt there are three parts to this article.

Can you briefly describe the flavor and feel of your campus?

Pratt's main Brooklyn campus comprises 25 landscaped acres in the historic Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, which also is home to the largest outdoor sculpture park in New York City. Pratt is the ideal college campus for the art, architecture, or liberal arts student with its close proximity to New York City cultural institutions including The Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Brooklyn Museum, and The Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Pratt also has a Manhattan campus in Chelsea, a thriving arts center that contains more than 300 art galleries.

Can you briefly describe your financial aid?

Financial aid at Pratt is awarded on the basis of financial need and merit. Pratt offers various kinds of assistance from need and merit-based financial aid including tuition scholarship, and grants to loans, assistantships, work-study employment, and tuition management programs. By combining federal, state and institutional funds, we make every effort to assist you in meeting the increasing cost of a college education. In fact, over 90 percent of our students receive some kind of financial assistance.

Can you provide the number of scholarship programs?

Pratt distributes $20 million in unrestricted scholarship money and $1.1 million in restricted scholarship money annually.

What percentage of your student body has some kind of financial aid?

79 percent

Of that percentage receiving financial aid, what is the average percentage of their tuition being covered?

67 percent

Besides learning the nuts and bolts of creating art, how do you prepare your students business-wise for a career in the arts?

Pratt seeks to instill in all graduates aesthetic judgment, professional knowledge, collaborative skills, and technical expertise. With a firm grounding in the liberal arts and sciences, a Pratt education blends theory with creative application in preparing graduates to become leaders in their professions.

How is your college involved in the community in which it is located?

  • Pratt Center for Community Development - The Pratt Center works for a more just, equitable, and sustainable city for all New Yorkers, by empowering communities to plan for and realize their futures. As part of Pratt Institute, Pratt Center leverages professional skills-especially planning, architecture and public policy-to support community-based organizations in their efforts to improve neighborhood quality of life, attack the causes of poverty and inequality, and advance sustainable development.
  • Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project (MARP) - Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte is a founding member, trustee, and chair of the Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project, a neighborhood collaboration that revived the portion of the avenue that runs through Clinton Hill and Fort Greene into a thriving retail district by increasing foot traffic and attracting new shoppers. His decision to build Pratt's book and art supply store on Myrtle Avenue in 2005 has given Pratt's more than 5,000 faculty, students, and staff an opportunity to frequent the avenue, which has further contributed to the economic vitality of the area.
  • Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation - The Pratt Design Incubator for Sustainable Innovation is a vibrant and energetic atmosphere supporting the entrepreneurial talents of designers, artists and architects selected from the Pratt community who share a common goal: linking the social entrepreneur with the business of design. The Incubator sponsors environmental, social and cultural initiatives and benefits from a growing network of legal, business, engineering and manufacturing experts. The Incubator provides the following: Start-up support for Pratt entrepreneurs; Design consulting services on a project basis; Workshop and seminar organization; Mentorship Network coordination; Resource Center for design entrepreneurs.
